Social Thinking Groups
Recognizing the social challenges of those impacted by ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, and related disorders, Mind Matters is proud to offer group and individual sessions focusing on developing social understanding and perspective-taking abilities. Parents/guardians are actively involved in the treatment to allow for the generalization of skills across all environments (i.e., home, school, work, community).
Mind Matters utilizes the Michelle Garcia-Winner “Think Social” (www.socialthinking.com) inspired program for ages 5-18. These groups meet once a week for 50 minutes with 10 minutes of parent/guardian interaction.

Edu-Therapeutics
Edu-Therapeutics is a unique learning system that offers effective solutions for overcoming dyslexia, attention deficit, learning disabilities and reading challenges. It succeeds because it changes how an individual uses his or her brain to learn. It is unique because it identifies the underlying cause of the learning inefficiency and addresses the symptoms.
Edu-Therapeutics is based on the understanding that brain research has shown how the brain works and how brains best learn. From this starting point, proven tools, techniques, and materials are focused into the specific areas that students need in order to overcome any learning issue. It is not a “one size fits all,” but rather a prescriptive approach.
An Edu-Therapeutics class applies this treatment approach by engaging the student in fun, highly motivating games and activities. A student will participate in five or six activities each day, and on each succeeding day there is a different series of five or six activities. The activities specifically target and strengthen areas of the brain affecting learning efficiency. New Edu-Therapeutics groups form throughout the year.
Fast ForWord
The Fast ForWord program developed by Scientific Learning (www.scilearn.com) is a scientifically proven, computer-based reading and language intervention program that has been shown to improve reading achievement in students.
The Fast ForWord series of products begins by strengthening the foundations of basic language skills: memory, attention, processing and sequencing. The programs that follow bring the student through increasingly challenging and sophisticated levels of reading skills. The Fast ForWord program is based upon the latest developments in neuroscience and is designed to increase processing efficiency.
Each student progresses through the program according to his/her rate of success. Immediate positive reinforcement is built into the program. In addition, one-on-one personal coaching is provided by a staff member who has received special training. A number of positive motivational methods are employed to keep the student interested and advancing through the program.
Mind Matters offers the Fast ForWord program throughout the year, with new groups forming continually.
“My 6 year-old son’s reading has advanced at least six months in just a few weeks. Before his reading was painfully plodding, such that comprehension was lost in a sea of error. My autistic 4 year-old’s language has blossomed.
Most surprising of all, I have witnessed my children attend an educational program with excitement and pleasure. Thank you, Mind Matters. I would recommend the program to anyone who feels their child is missing the key to language.” –Marie Drakes
Mindful Parenting: Available to Calaveras County parents only
Mindful Parenting is a COPE inspired parent training program offered to Calaveras County parents or guardians with children under the age of 18. Mindful Parenting consists of six weekly two-hour sessions where parenting skills are presented in a unique, interactive format.
Parenting is the single most important task any adult “takes on” in his or her lifetime – yet this is a job for which most of us receive little, if any, preparation or training. Mindful Parenting provides practical ideas and direction for parents wanting to “update” their parenting skills. These include:
- Taking care of personal stress
- Listening and talking effectively with your children
- Encouraging co-operation regarding chores, mealtimes, school work, etc.
- Promoting positive relationships among brothers and sisters
Research has shown that the COPE curriculum is extremely effective. Parents also enjoy attending the series of workshops. By the end of the series of sessions, parents should have the support they need to help their children (and themselves) to feel and do better.
Susan Deax-Keirns, MA, LMFT, & John Berner, PhD facilitate discussions that help participants develop, practice and strengthen skills that will allow them to achieve their own individual goals for parenting their children.
