Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I start?

Initial appointments can be made by calling (209) 728 2184  and more information received by contacting us.

What can I expect on our first visit?

The initial encounter will be with either the Autism Specialist or the physician and would involve an extensive interview with the individual and/or the family regarding current concerns, family history and school or job performance if applicable. An examination by the physician would be performed to pursue any medical conditions that might affect the individual.

What should I tell my child about his/her visit to Mind Matters?

Most children who are evaluated already know that a problem exists because of negative experiences at school and/ or at home. Be clear that we are looking for ways to help them be more successful.

What ages does Mind Matters treat?

Mind Matters treats all ages of individuals with these disorders including adults.

What is involved with a diagnosis of Autism? Treatment?

Following the initial interview and exam, any prior evaluations will be reviewed and then focused standardized testing would be performed. Based on the interview, examination and results of standardized testing, a diagnosis will be made and an individualized treatment plan will be recommended.

What is involved with a diagnosis of ADHD? Treatment?

Following the initial intake interview and examination, prior evaluations would be reviewed, and then standardized questionnaires would usually be distributed to the parents and teachers. Other potential concurrent concerns would be evaluated separately to ensure a complete understanding of the individual is obtained. Once the information is gathered and reviewed, a diagnosis will be made and a tailored treatment plan will be recommended.

I am interested in avoiding medications. What alternate treatments do you offer?

Most individuals are concerned about the use of medications. Though medications may be recommended for some individuals, we will always be looking for other equally or more effective means to treat an individual. This may include changes in diet, specific supplements, lifestyle changes, counseling, neurofeedback training, dyslexia remediation and more.

Can Mind Matters help me find the right programs for my child in school?

Once an accurate diagnosis has been achieved, we can make specific recommendations for improving the individual's educational experience, such as modifications or accommodations in the classroom, teaching approaches and help with conquering the homework. Direct contact with the school may be recommended to work collaboratively with the educators.

Can a staff member attend school with my child for observation?

If appropriate to help understand a child's situation at school, a direct observation may be scheduled with the Autism Specialist. This can be very valuable when the nature of a child's struggle is unclear to the parent and the Mind Matters staff..

What medical insurance is accepted at Mind Matters?

We accept most insurance plans in our office for medical services. However, services other than those of the physician may or may not be a covered benefit for an individual. Please contact your insurer to see what is covered by your plan.  We will gladly give you a copy of a superbill to submit to your insurance company for counseling and psychoeducational services.

What credit cards are accepted at Mind Matters?

We accept Visa, MasterCard and Discover Card payments.

What is the policy for missed appointments?

We are proud to offer sufficient time in each appointment to fully evaluate and treat our clients. Therefore, missed appointments are very disruptive to our schedule and cannot be readily replaced. An individual may miss a single appointment without consequence, otherwise we require 24 hours advanced notice for cancellations or missed appointments. If an appointment is missed or canceled within that time, a fee will be charged: Cancellation Fee = $40 dollars; Missed Appointment Fee = $60 dollars
